Handlung

If you like Spader - this is a must watch. Personally i think this is one of his best works and excellent TV drama!

Dropped it after the first season, sure it may not be the worst show or sure it may not even be bad but for me at least it felt pretty boring and repeditive after a while.

This has been an amazing trash fire over the past two seasons. It has been since season 5 I'd say, but season 8 tops everything. Characters aren't their usual self anymore and Liz isn't only dumb, she's become insufferable.

Truly abysmal writing. Story beats that go nowhere, characters that do nothing, threats that make no sense, motivations that arise and disappear ex nihilo, solely to serve the purpose of a given scene. Story threads rarely connect in a meaningful way, and almost everything - from the dialogue to the action sequences to the genre trappings - prioritizes slickness over narrative cohesion. It is a _cool_ show that fails to make sense. The show does a masterful job of creating ominous scenes and interesting threats, particularly in opening sequences. But those scenes are always extrapolated into a contrived larger story, and those characters are always revealed to be a less interesting monster of the week than what is initially imagined. The Blacklist is a disappointment on nearly every level, and the wry, cerebral promise of its excellent opening scene is broken within five minutes - never to be kept again. This is all to say nothing of the limitless fancy of its departures from science, law, or reality. And, like any modern procedural, it casually normalizes the systemic abuse in law enforcement. If you appreciate good writing, you'll find nothing of interest. If you appreciate the espionage/spy thriller genre, you will find nothing new. This is a "filler" show that's very good at cold opens, easy digestibility, and getting James Spader a well-deserved paycheck. Alternatives: - For an insight into criminality and dangerous people, try Oz, Ozark, The Night Of, or (for the patient) Rectify. - For an underworld thriller that never misses a beat, try Preacher, Barry, or Homeland (the first few seasons, at least.) - For a procedural with top-notch dialogue, Hannibal, Justified, and (for the most part) Castle. Rubicon, too, probably. - And if you want something with all those qualities, I can't recommend enough The Americans.
