One of those series that hasn't aged well. It isn't helped by a terrible transfer to DVD, which looks as if it was just copied from VHS. There are far too many pieces to camera from helicopters, connected by a series of breathless expositions, together with an erratic and over-enthusiastic presentation style. 'In Search of the Dark Ages' was Michael Wood's first appearance on TV. It shows. He went on to make far superior programmes, with much more well-thought out material.
