So glad this show is back
Reno 911! is a deliberately lowbrow, improv-heavy mockumentary comedy that parodies the law enforcement reality TV genre—especially shows like COPS. It’s a chaotic blend of cringe humor, absurd scenarios, and deadpan delivery, set in the fictional Reno Sheriff’s Department, where professionalism is nowhere to be found and common sense is in even shorter supply. The show thrives on its cast of incompetent officers, played by an ensemble of comedians who largely improvised their lines within rough outlines. Thomas Lennon’s short-shorts-wearing Lt. Jim Dangle became the unofficial face of the show, flanked by a mix of dimwits, loose cannons, and misfits that made up the rest of the department. Whether they were botching traffic stops, interrogating uncooperative suspects, or getting themselves arrested by accident, the humor was in how consistently bad they were at their jobs. Reno 911! works best in short bursts. Its sketch-like format allows for quick laughs, and when an improvised moment lands, it can be genuinely hilarious. The absurdity and spontaneity give it a scrappy charm—one that feels like a bizarre hybrid of The Office and Jackass filtered through Police Academy. However, the show’s intentionally dumb and irreverent humor wears thin fast. It leans heavily on repetition, shock value, and caricature, which makes for a lot of hit-or-miss moments. Not every joke lands, and the sheer volume of scenes that rely on awkward silences or offensive gags means there are long stretches where the comedy feels forced or outdated. While it's intentionally politically incorrect, it doesn’t always manage to balance satire with wit. Despite its cult status and unique voice, Reno 911! is more scattershot than sharp, and often more annoying than clever. I give Reno 911! a chaotic but inconsistent 5/10.
I have never laughed this hard in my life :rofl: Great show 💯
This is an entertaining show, but it is rather hit and miss. It is a one note concept and, because of that and because of the fact that it is improvised, some episodes are hilarious and some are not funny at all. (Somewhat surprisingly the Pilot is perhaps the weakest of the entire season.) I can’t really imagine watching the other seasons at this point, unless I knew something was going to change, as it really does seem to depend on whether they were able to luck into a good idea during the process. The ones where it is just a parody of COPS, with nothing else happening, usually fall flat. It does make me laugh more than it doesn’t, though.
