I applaud Sky for trying to make a better quality SCI series. I can see there has been money spent on both special effects and props/sets. However the storyline is weak. I love the classic Brit SCI series Blake 7. It was a real game changer and I still watch it today. This series could have borrowed elements from this is series and modernised/adapted it. There are some cast members in the show bring little to the story. Its not the actors fault! But more the lack of script/backstory. A leader that constantly threatens her crew, a crew member who just makes mistakes all the time (No humorous) and a drug addict alien that provides not much support for the rest of the crew. This can't work on any working ship in space or otherwise.
It’s a British show and I had hopes, but I was sadly disappointed. It seems to have a decent budget from the sets, props etc, but the story is weak, as are some of the characters and actors. I did wonder, if perhaps this is a show with a target audience for older children, if so, then it would be fair to rate it higher. However, I’m sure there’s swearing and unlikely to be a children’s show. The main cast are all meant to be about 17yrs of age in the show, but it’s awkward watching them play characters 15yrs+ older than they are.
It was really cringe worthy during the first episode when a character panicked and said she would be with harden, crazed criminals. Then she was placed with other teenagers who acted as though they were extremely mentally deranged, rather than harden criminals. Unfortunately, this scenario went on too long!
On the plus side, the storyline gets better and stronger during episode 3 and eventually the characters settle as the show goes on, becoming more realistic, likeable and enjoyable. I don’t like to give up on shows early on and I wait for them to develop, but as of watching the whole first season, I really don’t think I would watch another season. I feel it’s a show aimed at older children.
I wanted to like it. But making a SCI FI that has all this cutting edge tech and yet haven't gotten a way to neutralize a criminal on the run? Don't have a polygraph test so they could use it to determine culpability? Unfortunately the storyline is really weak.
I liked it, but there are so many series like this. Discontinued...
EDIT: cancelled after 1 season (and rightfully so!) - open ended. Do not bother to watch this crap. The Tula mom character is endlessly annoying. That person alone is reason enough to get this series cancelled. For real though - what a dreadfully stupid story. Nothing unique or even remotely interesting. Of course there is some strong suppressing organisation / government. There are rebels. Theres important people on both sides who have lots of history. Of course. Main character with daddy issues - check. Kids having been lied to all of their lives - check Shifting loyalties all over the place, episode by episode - check Unfulfilled promise by a smart but weak person who then of course builds up character to say no to addiction - check White guy abusing power - check Undervalued boy getting strong - check Interracial relationship - check. Forbidden love - check. Mommy issues - check. Kid rebelling against overly controlling mom - check. Mutual understanding reached and love conquers all - check. Lesbian love - check. Bad guy pirate turning good - check. Did I mention shifting loyalties episode by episode? Check check double check. Illogical personal motivations - check. Not even sure how many other obvious b.s. I should even bother to list :)
