We enjoyed it overall. There were a few funny parts but the story had multiple holes. My wife enjoyed it and I got to spend time with her so it was a good day overall. I thought this was going to go a different direction. They bring up an axe murderer early on in the movie. I would have preferred if she was actually the murdurer and the entire Frankenstein thing was just something that was in her head.
**Proper portions of eighties nostalgia, levity, and murder.**
Finally a wide release for mainstream weirdos
Cute little sci-fi/horror/comedy, I think it would have worked much better though if they had leaned into the dark comedy a bit more. This could have been like a Heathers successor with all the murder happening, but it feels like it embraced the absurdity more than the dark humor. I can forgive some of the plot holes, given that it does embrace the absurd, but the story really deserved some more dark comedy. Newton really carries the movie, but I thought the step-sister was excellent as well. I'd like to say Cole Sprouse did a good job, but idk how much work really goes into making some faces and grunting. The scenes with him and Newton worked entirely because of how charming Newton is.
I found the film to be entertaining overall, but they could have given the protagonist a bit more personality. The fact that he doesn't speak throughout the film bothered me a bit. Some characters are quite caricatured, but that fits with the film's weird and nostalgic aesthetic. Suspend your disbelief and let yourself be carried away by the psychedelic trip that this film is. Some things won't make sense and others won't be explained, but in the end, you'll feel good.
