„Explorers“ ist ein Meisterwerk optischer Effekte, gekonnt inszeniert von Joe Dante, dessen „Gremlins“ Weltruhm erlangten. Diese Verfilmung führt direkt in das Reich der Phantasie und Fabelwesen, deren Lebendigkeit fasziniert. Drei kleine Jungen planen die Reise ins Universum, dem Ziel ihrer Träume. Mit Hilfe eines Computers konstruieren sie einen magischen blauen Kreis, in dem sie ins Weltall reisen wollen. Doch die ersten Versuche enden recht waghalsig und so bauen sich die drei in fieberhafter Arbeit ein blitzendes und blinkendes Raumschiff. Der erste Testflug wird zur Bruchlandung und die örtliche Polizei beginnt, nach dem geheimnisvollen UFO zu suchen. Da bleibt den Abenteurern nichts anderes übrig, als sich endgültig auf die phantastische Reise ins All zu begeben, die keine Wünsche offen lässt …

The movie was ok until they went to space. There it become very childish and did not appeal to me.

So the movie didn't age all that well, but damn, it sure got the 80s nostalgia fired up. Somewhat bittersweet though as seeing Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix that young made me feel super old. Not so fun fact: 2 of these kids (Phoenix and Amanda Peterson) died of drug overdoses. Enjoy the movie!

The movie could have been something really special, until the third act. It devolved from a coming of age sci-fi adventure into poorly produced and cartoonish slop. The way it was wrapped up felt rushed and the vibe didnt fit the rest of the movie. For that reason, it sucked.

This movie is probably Ok for young boys, but for the rest, it is just too naive, too silly and too much inconsistent it its tone. It goes from serious growing up elements to plain silly slapstick. Furthermore, the special effects are weak, even for the period.
