This probably has a cult following and I can actually see why that is. From a filmmaking point of view this is interesting. But that does not make it a great movie, at least not for me. I felt kinda bored and the style I didn't like much, too.
Robert Rodriguez made this movie with budget of about 7'000 dollars. It shows on the quality of the images as well as the quality of the actors. But amazingly, Rodriguez has managed to make it nonetheless a good crime-action movie, despite these extremely little means. Per dollar invested, this is probably one of the best crime-action movies ever made.
Very disappointing flick: I watched this one after "Desperado", which I liked very much. But everything in "El Mariachi" is worse than in it's sequels: bad acting, a rather stupid story and boring action scenes are not worth your time. Watch "Desperado" and "Once Upon A Time In Mexico", they are the much better movies...
Just plain ole cool: a mythic character pulling off impossible stunts, complete with plenty of blanks and squibs, occasional wirework, and a vibe that's somehow dark but simultaneously fun. Maybe it's lacking depth, but the action is unforgettable.
a fun spanish language movie. It's good but raw. It's shot on a shoestring budget and it looks like it was shot on a shoestring budget. But beyond that it's still good. Such iconic imagery in this film.
