Ultimately, joy is nothing more than a brief wet dream. While intoxicated by it, you believe it's forever, but once the climax passes, you realize emptiness is never absent. Bi Gan has an absolute gift for picking songs. If karaoke had a spokesperson, he’d be the undisputed choice.
Told through sensory vignettes exploring 6 Buddhist roots of sensation (something I had to, admittedly, research in order to understand) and sequences exploring the birth and decay of cinema, this SF story tells us a lot about human and art condition. I love how it combines surrealism (I noticed some Bunuel), noir, theatrical cinema, handheld camera with wide shots and panning in the style of Tarkovsky (I noticed a lot of Tarkovsky) and some other filming techniques I cannot name. What I didn't like was that its dreamlike and meditative quality didn't have that grip that would keep me really interested in all the sequences in the movie.
Very PICTURESQUE, absolute cinema, breathtaking scenes and outstanding performances but very HEAVY and difficult to follow. Would have appreciated a bit of a touch where i could grasp everything holistically. Other than that, chef‘s kiss.
Watching this in a small, crumbling arthouse theatre really set the mood. It looked like there was a big hole in the ceiling covered with tarp and several rows of seats below with garbage bags over them. wtf, this comment isn't even talking about the movie... or is it? This was a lot. Go in for an experience. I recommend giving yourself space to just be along for the ride. I probably need to sleep on this one a bit before forming an opinion.
