I thought _The Gentlemen_ was a nice return to form for Guy Ritchie, so I wonder what happened here. Not only is this very low effort in just about every regard (uninspired visuals, generic score, bad acting, no clever editing, extremely by the numbers characters/story, zero memorable scenes), but it even manages to mess up on what is usually Richie’s biggest strength: the dialogue. During some points of this movie I was reminded of _Bullet Train_ (which was rightfully accused of being a Guy Ritchie rip-off, funny enough), because both movies have these brief moments where characters are acting ‘quirky’, but it feels like these conversations are written by a normie who doesn’t understand what being quirky means. It certainly does not mean acting random and cringy, which is something you’d assume the filmmaker behind _Snatch_ would understand. Are there genuinely people out there who think this is funny? Because I’d argue it gives a lot of Marvel’s recent output a run for its money on the cringe-o-meter. Anyway, this film gains a couple of points for the production value and some ok directorial work (a few of the fight scenes are actually pretty decent), but honestly I’ll be very surprised if I remember any of this within a week. 3/10
This is not Guy Ritchie's best movie. It's not Guy Ritchie's best movie starring Jason Statham. It's not even Guy Ritchie's best movie featuring a sleazy, cockney-accented Hugh Grant who loves an outdoor barbecue grill. But it is Guy Ritchie's only movie with Aubrey Plaza. (Also, Josh Hartnett is freaking hilarious.)
Operation Fortune is a decent film. There are moments of Guy Ritchie greatness, but the story failed to draw me in. It just lacked the intelligence and creativity found in Ritchie's other work.
Aubrey Plaza steals every scene
I went into this hoping it wasn't another by-the-numbers Jason Stratham action flick, but it mostly was. Stratham wants to be the next Bruce Willis but really is more of the sad Liam Neeson doing whatever action flick comes his way because he has no chops for anything else. Hugh Grant was pretty good in this, as was Aubrey Plaza, and overall it's a decent action film but nothing earth shattering. If you have seen any of Strathams 400 other nearly identical action flicks then you've seen this one with a few exceptions.
