_Lightyear_ is built on a conceit that never really works. It presents itself as the movie Andy supposedly watched in 1995, the film that made him fall in love with Buzz Lightyear. But nothing about it feels remotely like a mid-’90s sci-fi blockbuster. The hypermodern 3D animation and overt nods to films like _Interstellar_ and _The Martian_ immediately break the illusion. That’s a shame, because a genuine 2D throwback to ’90s sci-fi would've probably been a more interesting approach. Setting that meta problem aside, the movie we actually get is mostly uninspired and forgettable. It aims for a serious, gritty sci-fi tone, and while that’s not inherently a bad direction, it drains the film of energy. It’s rarely entertaining and almost never funny. The visuals, while a touch drab, are easily the most engaging thing on screen. Unfortunately, they’re attached to generic storytelling, flat characters, and direction that consistently fails to land emotional beats. The handling of Zurg especially doesn't work. He was already one of the weakest elements of _Toy Story 2_, and here the film tries to retroactively make him more clever and meaningful. The twist surrounding his character is supposed to reframe him as more than a _Star Wars_ homage, but it’s so contrived that it completely collapses. Worse, the movie falls into the classic bad-prequel trap: overexplaining lore that never needed explanation. Catchphrases, suit buttons, backstory minutiae, none of it adds depth or insight, only noise. By the end, _Lightyear_ doesn’t change how you see Buzz or enrich the Toy Story films in any meaningful way, which makes the whole exercise feel pointless. Even the voice work disappoints. Chris Evans sounds oddly disengaged compared to Tim Allen’s iconic take on the character. Taika Waititi is given comic relief duties and simply isn’t funny. The clear standout is Peter Sohn as Sox, the only character with real charm or timing. In the end, _Lightyear_ leaves no impact. Like _Toy Story 4_ it doesn't justify its own existence, nor does it function as a standalone sci-fi story. It feels destined to be quietly ignored going forward, something the Toy Story series will eventually pretend never happened. 4/10
Not as bad as everyone says it is. People who are saying that this is an unnecessary movie are dumb. Every movie ever made is basically unnecessary. This movie isn’t a 10/10. But i actually enjoyed. And to all you people review bombing this for the LGBTQ+ representation.. screw you, really, go screw yourself in the asshole. MODERATION EDIT: I've changed a few words because of bad language. Don't use such words here.
This was not the best movie that I would expect out of Disney and Pixar. Yes it was a fine movie, the action and jokes were decent. Although a good bit of it was poorly or overly done, the pen for example, that was possibly one of the dumbest running jokes I’ve seen in a movie. Not clever in the slightest, just simple and dumb humor. I personally am happy about Disney’s representation of a same sex couple in the film. It didn’t really impact the story at all, in fact, it made the relationship between Buzz and her seem stronger since there was no physical attraction at all. It’s not often you get a movie that doesn’t force some kind of relationship among the main characters. It was simply an alright movie, not groundbreaking and just a formulaic entertaining movie.
So, where do I get a Sox?
Beautiful animation and great story! So much attention to detail on the tech and the gadgets it really fells like sci-fi. Loved the time jumps and everything they did with that making it multi-generational made it compelling and emotional. It has some *Star Wars* vibes at times. SOX the cat steals the show he was so funny. I would be open to a sequel or a Woody movie.
