The original title of the film is Terra em Transe.
Experience marred by poor subtitles, but I could appreciate the beautiful filmmaking. The editing and score were gripping, building waves of tension that really popped off the screen. Felt like such a vibrant departure from all the Brazilian movies I've seen from the 40 years prior.
Terra em Transe (1967), directed by Glauber Rocha, echoes the style of Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol with its allegorical approach and bold visuals. However, its fragmented narrative, while politically significant, lacks the emotional pull to fully engage. The film often feels like a parade of prominent figures of the time, leaning into spectacle and flamboyance. Despite its historical importance, its excessive grandeur has not aged well, diminishing its lasting impact.
