[Fantasia '25] Recovering one of the most bizarre titles of the Hong Kong wuxia genre, this film is a psychedelic madness that contains all kinds of magic spells like laser beams and fire expelled from the mouth, along with creatures like a kung-fu practicing ape and a magician with chicken legs. Presented with a well-restored image in 2005, it is possibly one of the most extreme films of the Shaw Brothers production and ends up being fun and fascinating in its absolute creative freedom and its choreographies created by one of the masters who revolutionized the genre in the sixties, Tong Kai.
this movie is suprisingly pg 13 for a b movie from the 70s. you can tell they had fun with the amount of absurd effects and actings they kept doing. would be real good if done with todays cgi. the story is good. no comical villans or good guys. villans actually have good reason for what they do. do note though there is those funny evil laughs as well as many so bad its good moments. lol. the ending felt cheap though. *ending spoiler they just had to find whatever reason to keep the brother and sister from 'getting it on' after everythings settled and what they came up with was to kill off one of them. cant bang if dead i guess. which came unexpectadly and very cheap.
It always gets weird when Shaw Brothers Wuxias move into the supernatural, and The Battle Wizard is no exception. Crab men, a snake wielding lady, and laser shooting bones are just some of the weirdness to be had with this one. Not exactly up there with the best, but it's worth a watch if you like Shaw Brothers wuxias... Especially the supernatural kind.
