I mean it exposes some of Flaherty’s fabrications and misdeeds but only to frame it as another chapter in a complicated artist’s story. They reveal ‘Nanook’s’ real name is Allakariallak but keep calling him Nanook, because this is still about Flaherty’s story. This is as much for the whites and told by the whites as the original doc was. Condescending paternalism is framed to make Flaherty’s distortions noble, and his children be abandoned are but asides. It has the feeling of tourists wanting to be like their favorite auteur throughout, and judging by the fact the director later did a biopic of Flaherty and ‘Nanook’ I think that’s the case.
