First silent film I've seen. Started off really really good, then took a complete 180 and went into a long boring section then ended pretty well. When it was good it was very good. It sounds weird to say about a film from 1927, but the special effects were really good and really well used. Also cool that when it comes to the whole "show don't tell" thing, this film didn't really have a choice and definitely did the show bit well.
I really enjoyed this simple, straightforward classic from the twilight of the silent film. My main qualm with many speechless pictures, the title cards, are cautiously kept to a bare minimum here - they're virtually non-existent in the third act - which delivers a film that not only flows much more smoothly than most of its peers, but also relies heavily on the pantomimed performances of its cast. Fortunately, they deliver en masse. Janet Gaynor, who looks strikingly similar to Drew Barrymore, actually won the first-ever Academy Award for best actress for this film (and the two others she appeared in that year), deservedly so. Both she and her male counterpart, George O'Brien, are tirelessly emotive throughout, telling the story through expression so it didn't need to be spelled out in text. It's also worth mentioning that, considering its age, I was blown away by the quality of the special effects in Sunrise, which are used ambitiously, but realistically, by the script. A bit over-the-top at times, it's more accessible than other films of its age and still deserves recognition as one of the best of the era.
The first third of Sunrise had me completely locked in, which is an impressive accomplishment for a 100 year old movie. The craft is undeniable. The camera movement, lighting, and staging feel far ahead of their time, and the use of superimposition to portray thoughts, memory, and temptation is stunning. Unfortunately, once the story settles into its simplicity, it loses much of its momentum.

Possibly, "Sunrise" is Murnau's best film. Its innovative use of the camera and editing techniques, along with visual effects and fluid camera movements that were revolutionary for its time, create a poetic and expressionist atmosphere that captivates anyone from the first frame.
