It had the budget, the cast and the right ingredients to make a great Christmas movie. Sadly they somehow managed to miss the ball, A good one time watch but that's all it was, won't be remembering anything that happened by next week
A Boy Called Christmas is a magical holiday film based on the bestselling children’s book. The story follows a young boy who goes in search of his father and discovers the mythical city of Elfhelm. The film has a solid cast that delivers good performances, and it uses an interesting storyteller narrative that adds a surreal quality. Also, the special effects are especially well-done. However, the plot itself is rather weak and isn’t a particularly compelling Santa Claus/Christmas origin story. Yet while it has a few problems, A Boy Called Christmas is an entertaining film that the whole family can enjoy.
I think this should become a Christmas Classic. I’d definitely watch it every Christmas! There is no Christ in this Christmas story (who is the true hope of Christmas) but there is sage wisdom for those who despair. I was sold when Maggie Smith walked off the trolley in the opening scene but that was just a foretaste of a stellar cast. Henry Lawfull is new to me but brings a joyful, lovely character to life. The location shots are beautiful from Finland, Slovakia, Czech Republic to London. The story is whimsical and wise in complete balance and it was great fun to watch the Christmas myth grow. I give this film a jubilant 9 (classic) out of 10. [Christmas Fantasy]
Enjoyable and pretty, but unfortunately this a great example of writers who never learned how to kill their darlings. There's just too many components (characters, subplots, tropes, settings, etc etc) with too little focus on any of them! Of course, this excludes
the _mouse_
who ended up the best character.
A good movie with a simple story, yet still enjoyable, creating emotional moments and featuring decent special effects.
