With this being a movie where the lead character's name is the title, she is made thoroughly unlikable. We follow the life of Frances: she is a bored wife and mother, her husband is a douche - the level I am talking is that of jacking off in his car or the suggestion that he exposes himself to a female coworker. I was confused by the direction early on, aren't we supposed to like Frances? Okay, maybe she is going to have an arc, I figured. Nope. It's stated that: 1. Frances is twenty five. 2. She is a substitute teacher. 3. Her husband doesn't seem to do much of anything at a job where there is clearly no HR department. 4. They have a kid, and 5. They all live in a huge house. The pieces just didn't fit. Put simply, I wasn't able to suspend my disbelief here. Moving on. The actual plot here is Frances gets involved with one of her students - it's never fully expressed what transpires and it's not totally important - and swiftly gets arrested and goes to prison. This is where the movie really lost me. So far, the story has shown Frances to be pretty bored with life, and a bit of a bitch. Once she gets to prison, she is revealed to be a total psychopath; she's treating the situation like it's funny. And I want to be clear here, the movie isn't funny, Frances just is not behaving as though being imprisoned is serious. So, the true problem with the film is that it's boring. Like, on paper, I could see this being very funny, but the way it is executed makes this such a failure. Another giant problem was the use of narration throughout the entire film, and a reoccurring scream. The scream is the strangest part. The first time it happens, the source is unclear, it wasn't until this kept going that I realized it was an internal scream from Frances; that is to say, instead of having Kaley Wheless, you know, act, we get the sound of a scream to let us know she's miserable. Brilliant. Not recommended. This movie is garbage. Not funny at all. Our lead character is horribly unlikable. The use of narration is just the weakest way to tell the story. Getting Kaley Wheless in a cheerleader outfit was the only highlight.

Not a black comedy, barely a dark comedy. Maybe a grey comedy about a female sex offender taking life before and after with indifferent acceptance. Good lead performance, good narrator, good supporting actors, good direction, good script and an okay though a little tiresome quirky soundtrack.

Quirkily enjoyable. This isn't a laugh out loud type of movie but it did make me smile.
