An den Ufern des Lake Michigan heuert Kapitän Seafield eine Mannschaft von Spezialisten an, um ein höllische Seeungeheuer zu töten, das in den trüben Tiefen sein Unwesen treibt.

Lake Michigan Monster feels like the work of a man who dreamt of making a monster movie, woke up halfway through and decided to keep filming the dream. Shot in high-contrast black and white on a shoestring budget, it’s a madcap comedy-horror about a delusional sea captain who assembles a small crew to hunt the creature that killed his father. Each new recruit adds a fresh layer of insanity until the whole thing spirals into cosmic nonsense of the best kind. The story itself barely matters. What sells it is the delivery: snappy dialogue, rapid editing, surreal transitions and the complete lack of self-consciousness from everyone involved. Seafield and his crew commit fully to the absurdity, treating each increasingly bizarre revelation with grave seriousness. The deeper they dive into the monster hunt, the more it mutates into a surreal fantasy of ghosts, curses and impossible sea beasts. Tews directs with a confidence that makes the chaos feel deliberate. The black-and-white visuals give it a mythic, dreamlike quality, while the humour plays like a lost Monty Python sketch filtered through early Guy Maddin. The film knows it would collapse if shot any other way, and that’s part of its genius. Between this and Hundreds of Beavers, Tews is proving himself a master of handcrafted absurdism. There’s real artistry hidden beneath the gags, and an imagination that feels completely unfiltered. It’s the kind of film that makes you want to grab a camera and make something wild yourself. If you liked The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, What We Do in the Shadows, Hundreds of Beavers, or any movie that treats nonsense as high art, you’ll have a blast with Lake Michigan Monster.
Came here after watching Hundreds of Beavers 2024... Loved it.. It's weird but never for one moment is it boring.. Sorry no spoilers... Enjoy the show.. Outstanding visuals.. An I must give a nod to the Soundstage. I will definitely be watching anything else this Director makes... 👌
