The Truth is a beautiful, entertaining, and lacerating movie. Watching as mother and daughter peal off decades-old layers of deception off each other is mesmerizing.
_La Vérité_ / _The Truth_ is like a haiku you wrote for homework in high school: it's not that great but the heart at its foundation is pure. Basically, the spirit is willing but the story is weak. _The Truth_ was written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, and is drenched in the poetry of simplicity, though not in the love of storytelling because this film has all the depth of a poem yet none of direction of a story. This subtle study in the relationship between mother (Catherine Deneuve) and daughter (Juliette Binoche) is a family drama which is more family than drama, but is worth a watch as the actresses both shine brighter than they have in years.
The movie is probably what you think it is: an opportunity to see two fabulous actresses share the screen. When the two of them share a scene, magic. When they don't.... forgettable. I think there was a better movie in there, maybe. The whole "truth" theme is touched on once in a while but not enough to justify the title. follow me at https://IHATEBAdMovies.com or facebook IHATEBadMovies
Kore-eda transformed. The art of acting ... in real life. Lies imitating reality. Kore-eda imitating French cinema. Memories also deceive. "You can't trust memory." The truth is fickle. It depends on our perception. "The truth is not interesting." Kore-eda tells his truth, even if it is his least recognizable film.
