lupita nyong'o and her ukelele redeem taylor swift for me for an hour
I'm surprised that this film had generally positive reviews from both critics and audiences. There is very, very little new or original in this comedic zombie flick. The comedy is not all that funny, likely due to all of the characters (outside of Lupita Nyong'o) being supremely unlikable. This wouldn't necessarily completely kill a horror film if the scares/kills/gore/frights can carry the film. But it can't here since everything is relatively bland.
I feel it is wrong to say it - but this movie was great! I went in with really low expectations, but it was that wonderful mix of comedy horror that zombies can bring. But definitely held together by Miss Caroline, who kept a straight face while playing that super teacher that every kid wants to imagine, fighting chaos and zombies while singing Taylor Swift songs and playing ukulele. Brilliant.
A refreshingly different take on on the Zom-Rom-Com genre previously explored by the likes of "Shaun of the Dead", and a plethora of B, C, and D list offerings, that, actually, pretty much sticks the landing. Lupita Nyong'o is impressive as here, she displays a different side than her usual weirdo/warrior variants, and shows that, unlike the apocryphal W.C. Fields advice to "never work with children or animals", she has the range and chops to do BOTH, and, has fairly believable chemistry with Dave, played by Alexander England. Josh Gad goes sorta' against type as a semi failed actor who found success pretending to be a jovial and exuberant man who entertains kids and loves them. However, he is later revealed to actually be a perverted, selfish, abusive, arrogant, hypocritical, and alcoholic child-hater who is only interested in "boinking" their mothers, including single moms, married moms, pregnant moms,.. well, you get the point. Not to be overlooked is the delightful, awesomely named Diesel La Torraca, as Dave's nephew Felix, with an honorable mention to Charlie Whitley as Max, who just wants to play putt putt golf. Worth the watch if you're looking for a spot of less intense horror for an evening.
Loved it. My wife and I really enjoyed this one. As much as I love comedy horror movies, it’s really hard finding one’s that are good, and funny across the board, but this one definitely deserves a higher rating than normal.
