'A child and a moron always tell the truth' Delightful film from Greek director Yorgos Tzavellas who is new to me. It's basically a take on Tolstoy's The Forged Coupon, whereby we follow a forged note from person to person as it changed hands. Bresson's (1983) L'Argent was based on it. In this film, it's a forged coin. And it's a comedy. And it's extremely enjoyable, especially all the insult matches the characters get into. And they are interesting characters and the film is very fluid. Very well cut. We zip from scene to scene with the help of voiceover from an omnipresent narrator. There is drama, comedy and tragedy (the section with the orphan girl was very moving). But in general it's a light hearted movie that feels like a cross between De Sica and Lubitch but better paced than either. And it has a charm all of its own. I will be checking out some more of the director's work soon.
