As a big fan of Prince, I'd heard that this was a favorite film of his when it was released. It's easy to see why as it tells a solid story about a svengali music manager - something he himself soon acted out in real life with bands like The Time, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6,The Family et al. It suffers 40 years on in the way other movies from this era do. The high budget flashiness of the 80s was yet to arrive but the gritty 70s had been grown out of. As a result, it feels a little anaemic in the script department. Rhe lead actor is good overall despite some heavy overacting at times. The story is based on a real 50s manager yet it is as predictable as an airport novel! The saving grace is that the 50s style songs are pretty decent. 6/10
