The first 40 minutes or so of this are pretty great! The story has a great set-up. The scene where Jo first encounters [spoiler]Vega[/spoiler] is awesome and exciting. Then we have some fun moments when Jo initially discovers his [spoiler]psionic powers[/spoiler]. However, after that, the film just kind of loses focus... different characters start getting introduced, and new plot threads start getting thrown in. The whole middle of the film feels kind of messy, like the scriptwriter didn't really know where to take the story, so they took it in a bunch of different directions. There's plenty to love about the visuals, with lots of detailed animation throughout, especially for a film from 1983. In terms of visual fidelity, it's right up there and may even surpass contemporaries such as Golgo 13: The Professional, and Barefoot Gen. However, even when the film got to its climax, I still felt mostly bored by it, and I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe the lackluster soundtrack had something to do with it? Or maybe the weak middle of the film had already taken the wind out of its sails by that point. Either way, I'd still cautiously recommend it to fans of 80s animation. However, if you do decide to watch it, just go in knowing that after the exciting first third, the last two thirds will likely bore you and have you asking "is this over yet?"
