Just because a person did something relevant or whatever you want to call it doesn't mean he had an interesting life. Gave up about 60% in... Was a snoozefest.
This movie is well made and tells the story of Georg Elser. He is a little known person, who deserves to be famous. In fact, Elser tried to kill Adolf Hitler and most of the top ranking nazis at the very beginning of WW2, namely only 2 month after the war started. Stauffenberg, who also tried to kill Hitler (see the movie Valkyrie with Tom Cruise) wanted to kill Hitler only towards the end of the war and failed because he made a big mistake. Had Elser succeeded, who knows what world we would live in. In fact, Elser built himself a bomb with a timer. The bomb worked and killed everyone close to it, so those people that were there where Hitler, Himmler, Goebels, Hess, Heydrich, Esser and other should have been. Only they were not. The reason: Hitler started his speech earlier than planned and shortened it because of bad weather. His plane could not take off due to the weather and so he had to take the train that left earlier. They left 13 minutes before the bomb exploded. The movie tells us the motivations and the consequences of Elsers deed and gets us to know the person. He should be honoured for his courage by all who verbally attacked the nazis without letting any actions follow. He did it and almost succeeded. Watch this movie in order to get to know this unknown hero of WW2.
Intense war drama with a story unknown by me but worth telling. Pretty solid acting and a bit of heavy for a warm summer night
An intriguing if ultimately unsatisfying film, this biopic of a man who almost killed Hitler at the outbreak of World War II splits the narrative between the central figure’s life leading up to his attempt and his subsequent interrogation and incarceration. The scenes set after the attempted bombing are the most successful, as the central characters struggle to answer whether this attempt was by a lone individual or supported by the Allies, but unfortunately for the audience, this is never really in doubt. Less successful are the scenes set before the attempt – the central figure’s life is largely unremarkable and the filmmakers seem more intent on depicting the gradual capitulation of those around him to the Nazis, while offering very little insight into either.
