This is pretty bland even though Lon Chaney, Jr. tries his best to prop up Bela Lugosi's subpar Frankenstein's Monster. More angry mobs go after the Frankenstein's again, this time it's Baroness Elsa Frankenstein who feels their wrath. The fight between the Monster and the Wolfman in the last few minutes is fun and the miniature effects of the castle and the dam were really cool.
Two of Universal’s biggest monsters collide in _Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man_. After discovering that he’s immoral, Lawrence Talbot journeys to Castle Frankenstein in search of Dr. Frankenstein’s notes on creating life; but instead he finds the Monster himself. Lon Chaney, Jr. reprises his role as Talbot and Bela Lugosi takes on the Frankenstein role. The performances are pretty good, and the script does a fairly decent job of resurrecting Talbot and at finding a reason for him to cross paths with Frankenstein. However, there’s a little bit of a bait-and-switch going on, as the story’s more about discovering Frankenstein’s secret journal than the monsters fighting. But the Frankenstein/Wolf Man fight does come, and doesn’t disappoint. Fun and entertaining, _Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man_ is a well-crafted film that enriches Universal’s Monster series.
One of those movies that mixes genres. For fans
In Ghost of Frankenstein Bela Lugosi played Igor, who's brain ended up being transplanted into the monsters body, and in this movie, the follow up, Lugosi plays the monster.
"He is not insane. He simply wants to die." This is the first time watching one of these Universal horror movies where the some of the iconic monsters meet and it was enjoyable for sure but upon reading that some scenes were left on the floor makes me sad. But still seeing Maleva (Maria Ouspenskaya) again, the shot of the castle being flooded, Lon Chaney Jr. rocking it as Larry Talbot/the Wolfman, Dwight Frye!! and for me it is always a pleasure seeing Bela Lugosi. I do realize that I should have watched Ghost of Frankenstein and Dracula's Daughter first. Never expected these films to be this connected. So maybe a rewatch down the line? In the end however if you enjoy classic horror and especially the Universal Monsters, this is well worth a watch. Especially considering the runtime.
