Given the amount of star power within, not to mention the total babes - Slate, Kendrick, and Larson - I thought this was going to be good, but it's just another story with moments that go nowhere. I'm pretty sure this would qualify as mumblecore, only with an actual budget; more money, same problems. There is almost a plot in here, but I'm not going to try to elaborate on it, because the moment it starts to go somewhere, the movie just shuts it down, then ends. It's as if the film is trying to say, "hey, I know you want a story that is interesting, but I have no desire to give you that." What we do get are little moments with our characters that boarder on depth, then, similarly, it just stops. Just odd overall. Not funny enough to be a comedy, yet not serious enough to be a drama. It's merely short moments of people doing things until they move on to something else. Nothing is learned. Nothing is gained or lost. Overall, this is not a bad movie, it's just boring. If there would have been a message, some meaning, some laughs, some simple insight on the human condition that would lead one to feel something instead of the cold nothingness of this pointless existence. I probably would have given it a 6/10 then.
Some mid-range LA actors needed a paycheck since their royalties peaked from early 2000 successes. I found this film after watching Don't Think Twice and searching for films with Mike Birbiglia. It reminds me of a poor attempt at copying Slackers.
