Absolutely unhinged. A friend just had us watch this tonight as his pick for movie night, on his mom's suggestion of "a bad movie" (not a slur in this instance). I absolutely loved it. It was basically the Universal Monsters catalogue in a Cabin in the Woods situation where the point is for everyone to die. Absolutely unhinged in the best way. 8.5/10 if not more.
What a ridiculous movie - but in a good way. This is objectively a pretty bad movie that riffs on the _House of Wax_ set-up but, damn it, they certainly made it an entertaining ride, especially in the second half where it leans more and more into its goofiness. It was certainly lifted by the presence of decent actors in David Warner, Patrick Macnee, and John Rhys-Davies, who all seemed to be having a whale of a time and helped counterbalance some of the weaker acting amongst the younger cast members. A very 80s, very campy, and occasionally very gory horror movie that works as well as it does because it's clearly not taking itself too seriously.
"Would you like a closer look?". Waxwork will always be one of my all-time favorite horror movies. I first saw it as a kid and man, it scared the hell out of me in the best way possible! That whole idea of walking into a wax exhibit and suddenly being trapped in its nightmare vampires, werewolves, the Marquis de Sade, zombies—it still gives me goosebumps thinking about those foggy sets, the insane practical effects, and all that glorious, over-the-top gore that just feels so perfectly '80s.
What starts out as pretty cool and creative. Becomes overly goofy and bonkers by the end. Like it becomes a Naked Gun spoof like movie. Still, this was a pretty creative movie. The ending just could have been better.
