Zombies, starts well, then decays and the end is redeemed. Do not lose sight of the zombies
I'm not into manga, hadn't read this one, and had no background knowledge of this movie beyond a podcast contributor that I value mentioning it. I looked up so little (i.e. nothing) about this movie before going in, I didn't even know it was a zombie flick. Two initial observations: man this was hard to find to even watch! at least where I'm from. Why is it literally not available on any of the millions (being hyperbolic - more like thousands) of streaming services I subscribe to. Couldn't even find it on VOD! Second initial observation: this movie is really fun! And easy to recommend to anyone who likes the "alternative zombie" (for lack of a better term) sub-genre that has crept up over the last couple of years. The journey of the main characters is satisfying, and there's an action sequence near the end of this movie that is unbelievably satisfying in scope and execution. Freaking awesome! And gory as hell to boot (that applies to the whole movie by the way, so do not recommend if that[s something you have an issue with). My one major complaint is that the movie reeeeeally drags around the middle, to the point that I was close to losing interest. I'm glad I didn't. The start was funny, unexpected, and moved at a decent pace - and the last third more or less turns things up to 11 and then just keeps the dial there until the credits roll.
Solid zombie film. It's more of a character piece than we normally get in these, with a loser that rises to the occasion.
"I am a Hero" makes for a fun adaptation of the manga by the same name. Leaving out most of the elements that would make it less generic and just following it from the beginning might not put it it into anyone's favorite list but hey; plenty of zombie shotgun action can also suffice (with a lot of gore).
An exciting journey that combines horror, action, and comedy with stunning visual storytelling and well-developed characters. The film excels at balancing frenetic action scenes with more introspective moments, exploring the protagonist's personal growth amidst the chaos. The direction is energetic and stylish, while the special effects deliver striking realism, particularly in the bloodier sequences. Although the pace slows slightly in the second half, the infectious enthusiasm of the first part and the emotional connection to the characters more than make up for any shortcomings. A vibrant and memorable experience within the zombie genre.
