This movie did not age well.
Michael Douglas is a great actor, but Kathleen Turner is simply brilliant. I love her.
This is still an excellent dark comedy about divorce. The top notch cast does help to make it a pleasure to watch how love can become hatred… .. and they express their hatred in very creative, and sometimes insane, ways. Good fun with a 1980s vibe.
Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner are particularly adept at portraying the mutual hatred between the feuding spouses in “The War of the Roses.” This is especially advantageous toward the end, when the plot continues to escalate, and it is precisely where the film's strength lies. The uncompromising nature of this black comedy provides the biggest laughs, especially as the boundaries between humor and even a touch of horror tend to blur. However, “The War of the Roses” doesn't always strike the right note, and in the first few minutes I never believed that Douglas and Turner's characters ever liked each other at all. To make matters worse, both main characters are kind of assholes. And of course, the film is anything but subtle. However, if you can tolerate somewhat blunt films, you'll certainly have a bloody good time.
