This was a very nice music video compilation set to the early 1920’s. If you’re looking for an engaging, interweaving plot and intriguing characters, well… don’t. If you want something more interesting from this director well, maybe take a look at their underground film called The Godfather and maybe check out its sequel.
Certainly a very stylish looking film, but the plot just seemed insubstantial, there's a club, there's dancers, there's gangsters, there's a musician...
"You've got about as much style as a bowl of turnips." Going into Francis Ford Coppola's the Cotton Club totally blind and seeing; a lot of great Tapdancing, great looking sets, costumes, Bob Hoskins, Richard Gere with a great mustache, Nicolas Cage with a Tommy Gun, loads of Tommy Guns, learning that Gregory Hines is a Tapdance legend, classic shootouts, kids getting killed, Dexter's dad (James Remar), Hector Salamca! Judge Moses (Fred Gwynne) and Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane and a lot of romance. The story sometimes feels a bit like a drag and I enjoyed Sandman's (Gregory Hines) story the most. But it looks so good, the Tapdancing sequences and musical numbers are a lot of fun. They even do a version of Minnie the Moocher. But still, I might check out the director's cut someday to see if the story connects a bit better with me with the extra material. Anyway, The Cotton Club should have more views and if you have the chance, check it out!
It looks amazing (Coppola playing his greatest hits), talented cast, the music is good but yeah, the story isn't there.
