Opening moments and my first thought is, _"Where is Jim Ross?!!!"_ No offense to Michael Cole and Jerry La....well, meh, disrespect to Jerry Lawler because he just sucks AND he's obnoxious on the mic, but seriously: Where is "good ol' JR" Jim Ross? He's the voice of ....well honestly, Jim Ross is basically the voice of professional wrestling, IMO. He's been the voice of the WWF for several years already and I don't know if he's already dropped out of the picture or if he's just temporarily gone, but I'm seriously missing his ringside presence on the mic. Opening match is a three-way elimination match for the Hardcore Championship between "Al Snow & Head" vs "Hardcore Holly" vs the reigning hardcore champion, "Billy Gunn". The match was your typical three-way match: interesting but slightly confusing. Following this is yet another match that I really have zero vested interest in, as I don't care for any of the characters. It's a tag-team match between D'Lo "Boring" Brown (who gets escorted to the ring by one of the early WWF divas, "Ivory"). They're squaring off against the current tag-team champions, Jeff Jarrett and Owen Hart. Jarrett is escorted to the ring by a barely-clothed "Debra" (wearing a bikini that leaves nothing to the imagination) which immediately, of course, cheapens the entire match because you know this is going to be just about the women getting into a catfight and a lot of cleavage showing. The most interesting thing about this whole match is the dysfunctional relationship between the challengers, D'Lo Brown and "Test". It appears they hate each other and don't want to work together, so that makes the whole match more fun. The ending, of course, is pretty much what you would expect. Next on the menu: a "Brawl for All" match between Bart Gunn (winner of the original WWF "Brawl for All") vs famed tough-guy boxer "Butterbean". This was an actual "boxing" match (such as it was) and deserves to be seen just for how fast it was and the lightning-strike ending. Wow, that was vicious... Following this was a match between "The Big Show" (Paul Wight) vs Mick Foley's "Mankind". The match was as good as Mankind could make it (Paul Wight was gigantic but he really wasn't much of a performer; he was just gigantic.) and ended not a moment too soon. In truth, though, the match wasn't so much about an actual rivalry between Mankind and Big Show as much as it was a segue into another storyline. Following this was a four-way match for the "Hardcore Championship" featuring Val Venis vs Hardcore Holly vs Golddust vs Ken Shamrock. As most of these are, the match was confusing and hard to follow, and honestly, I don't care for the whole "Ryan Shamrock" angle, pretending that Alicia Webb is Ken Shamrock's "baby sister" who's boning either Golddust or Val Venis or SOMEONE of whom Ken Shamrock doesn't approve. To be honest, it's just another cleavage angle. And speaking of cleavage, the next match features "Kane" vs "Triple H". Like the Mankind/Big Show match, this one just wasn't all that exciting. However, it featured a barely-clad "Chyna" (Joan Laurer) making an appearance, as well as some Amazonia giant female bodybuilder, Nicole Bass. (Never heard of 'em, hope I never do again.) Although the match itself wasn't all that exciting, the conclusion was something that I didn't see coming. Next up we have the newly re-made "Sable" - now she's arrogant, vulgar, and the "Womens' Champion" - defending a belt against someone named "Tori" who comes out wearing a "catwoman"-like almost see-through bodysuit. This, of course, is just to ignite the guys in the audience, as the whole match is just poorly done and mostly features "Sable" grinding her hips. Next on the menu: a "European Championship" match pitting Shane McMahon vs "X-Punk" (Sean Waltman). This was a match I could've easily skipped through but I have to admit, the ending was hilarious. LOL I think I watched it three times just to see it happen over and over again. Following this was a little backstory about the heat between the "Undertaker" and his "Ministry of Darkness" going against Vince McMahon and "The Corporation". Apparently they've made The Undertaker (Mark Calaway) a lot darker/more evil character and want to play on that for awhile. This culminates in a "Hell in a Cell" match pitting Undertaker against "The Big Boss Man" (Ray Traylor). Now we come to the pinnacle: the "main event", and I'm pleased to hear "good ol' JR" Jim Ross coming out to call the match from the analysts' table. The "Championship" match - the main event pitting "The Rock" (Dwayne Johnson) vs "Stone Cold" Steve Austin gets a wrench thrown into it, of course, when Vince McMahon decides there are no legitimate referees so he (McMahon) is going to "referee" the match between Rock and Austin. This, of course, is hugely unpopular with the fans; this culminates in Michael Hickenbottom ("Shawn Michaels") as the "WWF Commissioner" showing up and doing his strut before declaring that Vince McMahon is not eligible to ref the main event. Of course, the fans are ecstatic, and the main event commences... The Rock's entrance hits, and the fans go nuts...until Stone Cold's music hits, and it gets even more boisterous. The match itself was every bit as good as you could imagine (except for the couple times The Rock just oversold a move) and had an ending that was the perfect finish to the evening. I would call this one of the better Wrestlemania cards, and certainly one of the best they've put on in several years. Definitely worth watching.
