Grand Prix is the F1 equivalent to Le Mans. Le Mans was critizised for not having a coherent story. For having basically no script. Grand Prix has both. The plot is to blame for the extreme length bacause it is two movies into one.The one where they're racing is fine, althought at times to artsy. And than there is the story, which feels put on. Le Mans was about racing. In Grand Prix racing it is but the canvas on which the story is painted. Still, for someone who likes historic racing it is worth seeing drivers like Graham Hill und Jochen Rindt. And, of course, the old cars. Everything in between is just waiting.
image 3.75 / 5 and sound 3.75 / 5. When it comes to racing it's fine, if only people get out, it's very stretched and unnecessary scenes, instead of 3 hours, it should have lasted 2 hours
I suppose I might describe it as impressive rather than good. The race cinematography is absolutely superb. Some madman came up with the insane idea of strapping a 70mm camera to a race car at 200 mph, and he actually did it! It still has not been surpassed today. The problem really is the story. There's just too goddamned much of it. Something like half the 3 hour run time is dedicated to personal drama that, while not intolerable, does get a bit grating sooner or later. Tightening the picture up by 30 or 45 minutes would, I think, have been more than possible, and a great benefit to the work as a whole.
Certainly one of the best car racing movies ever made. It tells the tale of a time long gone. A classic
