Die alleinerziehende Mutter Billy lebt mit ihren beiden Kindern Bones und Franky in Lost River, einem trostlosen Ort, der zunehmend zur Geisterstadt wird, da die Immobilienkrise die Bewohner wegtreibt. Als Billy mit den Hypothekenzahlungen in Rückstand gerät, lässt sie sich auf eine Idee des Bankmanagers Dave ein. Der erzählt ihr von einer Möglichkeit, wie sie vorerst über die Runden kommen kann: Um ihr Haus nicht zu verlieren, soll Billy in seinem Nachtclub arbeiten. Dort trifft sie nicht nur auf die geheimnisvolle Cat, sondern setzt schließlich auch ihr eigenes Leben aufs Spiel. Während sie mehr und mehr in eine morbide und düstere Unterwelt abtaucht, klaut ihr Sohn Bones wertvollen Kupferdraht aus den Wänden verlassener Häuser. Dabei hat es jedoch bald der brutale Bully, der sich selbst als Herrscher über die Stadt sieht, auf ihn abgesehen, wodurch auch Bones' freundliches Nachbarsmädchen Rat in Gefahr gerät.

The Goose Is Loose. If you're up for style over substance - ehr fucking everything... you'll have a great time. Otherwise, not so much.

A fairly uneven bag of tricks, but for a first attempt, Gosling shows he has a real eye and could go on to great storytelling. Some gorgeous visuals, score and symbolism. It's just not mixed together perfectly, like many other first attempts it seems he was just trying to hard to pay homage to too many different sources at once.

Wanted to watch this because of Saoirse Ronan and Ben Mendelson. What a waste of time.

This is one of those movies I get absolutely nothing out of. It´s the director-had-a-vision kind where a relatively simple story is blown out of proportion and told in overcomplicated pictures that are supposed to be artistic. OK, I get there are people out there who like that kind of stuff. I don´t.
