The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist is not the documentary to watch if you want clean answers. In fact, that may be its biggest strength and its biggest weakness. The film throws you straight into the confusion around AI: the promise, the panic, the hype, the safety warnings, the techno-optimism, and the uncomfortable fact that even some of the people closest to building these systems cannot confidently guarantee where this is heading. That alone makes the documentary worth watching. What stayed with me most is the contrast between the people warning about real existential or societal risks and the more optimistic voices who seem convinced that humanity will somehow end up doing the right thing. I found that optimism hard to fully believe. Human history is not exactly a perfect résumé for responsible use of power. The documentary does not fully answer the questions it raises, but maybe that is the point. AI is not one clean story. It is a dualistic force: good and bad, creation and destruction, hope and danger. At small scale, that is normal. At AGI scale, the bad side could become a tipping point. As a film, it is engaging, unsettling, and sometimes frustrating. As a conversation starter, it succeeds. It left me less with conclusions and more with the feeling that society is standing in front of something massive while still arguing about whether the door should even be opened. Not perfect, but important. A documentary that captures the chaos more than it resolves it and maybe that is the most honest thing it could have done.

Still, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of humor and the stylish animation woven throughout, which ultimately makes it worth watching.
