What’s not to like? Small town drama, some raunchy hockey humor and an underdog sports story. Crowe pushes it up.
[4.75/10] I watched _Mystery, Alaska_ today with my family during a little get-together. None of us had seen or even heard of it until recently, which was surprising (at first). It didn’t meet expectations at all. We definitely thought it'd be a little funnier and more entertaining overall. The scenery was stunning though! Russell Crowe’s performance was fine (which isn’t always a given for me), but his character wasn’t particularly interesting either. (None of them were.) The story left us wondering, “Why did they even make this?” It felt like a lot of effort went into something that was pretty unremarkable and unsatisfying (as a viewer, that is). That said, I’m sure hockey enthusiasts could get more out of it, so I may recommend it to someone with a serious love for the sport. For everyone else, it’s probably skippable. Still, I’m always glad to check out something new, even if it falls flat.
Film 27 of 2024 (Aim 300): Really enjoyed this underdog sport story. It's nothing groundbreaking, you've seen it all before but the characters and the setting help to lift this film.
