I had absolutely zero nostalgia going into Roll Bounce. A friend of mine loves it, so he bought it, and that was enough reason for me to finally give it a shot. It’s a good movie, and it’s absolutely dripping with early-2000s energy. Everything from the soundtrack to the fashion to the overall vibe immediately transports you back to that era. There’s a sincerity to it that I really appreciated. The best comparison I can make is that it captures the heart and coming-of-age spirit of Brink! while being packaged in a slicker, higher-budget production more reminiscent of Drumline. It has that same underdog charm and youthful enthusiasm that made so many movies from that period memorable. I don’t think I’ll ever dislike films like this. They have an earnestness that’s hard not to enjoy. If anything, my biggest disappointment is that I didn’t see it when I was a kid. I can easily understand why people who grew up with it have such a strong attachment, and I probably would have too. Rating: 3/5 – 75% – Worth Watching
