Imtiaz Ali is back to doing what he does best, but this time it feels far more personal and painful. Main Vaapas Aaunga tells the story of a 95-year-old man sinking into dementia, who is desperately clinging to one last wish... to visit his ancestral home on the other side of the border. The way the movie shifts timelines to show his past love against the backdrop of Partition makes you realize how some traumas never really heal; they just lay dormant waiting for the end to surface. Naseeruddin Shah's performance is so devastating it will leave you in tears. He plays the quiet confusion of dementia with such raw honesty. Diljit Dosanjh is equally good as the grandson who is just trying to hold onto his grandfather’s fading memories. Combined with A.R. Rahman’s score, which acts as a gentle heartbeat throughout the film, this is sure to become an experience that will leave you in tears.

If you're looking for a mainstream film about partition, go watch Bhaag Milkha Bhaag instead.
