Saccharine is an ambitious body horror that blends themes of diet culture, body image, and the supernatural. Featuring an unsettling atmosphere, strong practical effects, and a compelling performance from Midori Francis, the movie delivers several genuinely memorable and grotesque moments. However, it often struggles to define its identity, shifting between horror, satire, and dark comedy without always finding a consistent balance. Despite its intriguing premise and clear ambition, the uneven pacing and overcrowded narrative prevent Saccharine from fully realizing its potential, leaving it as a fascinating yet flawed entry in the body horror genre.
Not the best movie of 2026, but it had my full attention the whole time and was very well made.
Body horror is having a bit of a moment, and Saccharine taps into one of today’s biggest anxieties: our obsession with weight loss. With Ozempic and similar drugs dominating headlines, the film feels surprisingly timely, using that cultural backdrop to build an increasingly unsettling story. The way the haunting manifests is easily the film’s strongest element. It’s creepy, unpredictable and creates a lingering sense of unease that sticks with you long after individual scenes end. There are several genuinely disturbing moments that show plenty of imagination. Where it falls short is in the emotional connection. While the concept is solid, it never quite pulls you in enough to make the horror hit as hard as it should. It’s impossible not to compare it to The Substance, and unfortunately Saccharine doesn’t reach those same heights. The body horror is effective, but it lacks the sharp bite and emotional weight that made that film so memorable. It’s an interesting watch with some strong ideas and memorable imagery, but it never quite becomes more than the sum of its parts. If you liked…The Substance, Raw, Titane
