Fun movie. It just shows that with enough pace and plot ideas you can make whacky and a seemingly bad idea work A lost way of making movies. Even if the humour is hit and miss (I liked it), the characters are cartoon-like and the the plot is silly, a fast pace can do so much. As long as it's all coherent and the characters are fun. This movie is like a sweet desert treat. If you got that trashy exploitation sugar tooth than it's a must.
The cult classic ‘70s exploitation film Death Race 2000 is a provocative, ultra-violent rampage. In a dystopian future an annual cross-country race is put on to entertain the masses in which racers score points by running down and killing pedestrians, but the tables are turned when a rebellion attempts to takeout the racers. The film explores some very interesting issues, such as the culture of violence, the power of the media, and domestic terrorism. David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone lead the cast and give strong performances; especially Stallone, who brings a lot of charisma to the film. However, the production values are extremely low-budget, which is typical for a Roger Corman film. Death Race 2000 is an edgy thriller that tackles some controversial topics, but the filmmaking style holds it back.
Very strange movie from start to end. I've watched this 50 years after it was originally released, which gives me a different perspective from watching it on the day of release. Still, I'm sure this still would have been a weird movie even back in 1975.
Wow...and that isn't a good "wow". I honestly don't know if this was _intended_ to be this awful or if movies were just this bad back in my teenage years. I suppose at one time, this would have been thought to be pretty amazing but by today's standards, this is laughably bad. The best thing that can be said about this is that it's a merciful 79 minutes long. I found this one when I realized the 2008 version, featuring Jason Statham, was advertised as "a remake"; since that's one of my favorite car/action films, I wondered what the "original" must have been if _that_ was a "remake"...and I found this. Same plot, same characters, similar storyline but wow, this - again, by today's standards (and my own, which have gotten considerably higher over the years) - was just horribly, almost-laughably bad. There's absolutely no backstory (as there was in the 2008 version), you don't know what happened to cause America - and the rest of the world, I suppose? - to fall into such a state of hedonistic anarchy. You just start (with an awful "fanfare" by an equally awful high school marching bad) with a bad announcer, then a bad emcee, then an even worse "on the spot reporter"...and it goes downhill from there. If you're contemplating watching this, the best I can tell you is _"Think_ Wacky Races _only with real people and "real" cars."_ This is hilarious...but I don't think it was intended to be, which just makes it even funnier.
A really strange and disturbing movie which, despite the under par costume design and special effects, it particular in its concept. If you like Running Man, this is also for you
