"Manitou's Shoe" from 2001 is still one of the most successful German films of all time. And how I laughed as an 11-year-old at the movies back then. Michael “Bully” Herbig’s humor was still reasonably fresh, and as a parody of the Karl May film adaptations of the 1960s, the whole thing worked pretty well, too. Nevertheless, the decision to release a sequel, “Das Kanu des Manitu,” 24 years later comes as something of a surprise. Bully's humor hasn't really evolved since then, and I seriously doubt that it will appeal to a younger generation. But I must admit that I did find myself chuckling a few times. Sure, the jokes still revolve mainly around unoriginal puns and “funny” accents and dialects, but I guess there wasn't much more to expect than this kind of nostalgia. And at least the film is well-crafted. Overall, I didn't really need “Das Kanu des Manitu,” especially since the story isn't exactly great. But honestly, I had feared a much worse film. Fans of the first movie will probably not regret going to see it.

I went to see this movie mainly because of my wife. Personally, it didn’t really hit my sense of humor, although I did find myself chuckling here and there. That’s not because the jokes were “unacceptable” in today’s climate, but simply because this style of comedy has never truly been my thing — even Der Schuh des Manitu didn’t do much for me back in the day. That being said, I have to give Bully credit where it’s due: he had the courage to tell his jokes in his own way and didn’t fall into the trap of watering everything down for fear of backlash. In a time where so many productions — looking at you, Disney — often feel the need to overcorrect and smooth out any edge, it was refreshing to see a filmmaker stand firmly by his comedic style. So while the film didn’t fully work for me, I can still appreciate the boldness behind it, and I understand why it will resonate more strongly with audiences who are more in tune with Bully’s particular brand of humor.

Ich finde der Film ist nicht so klamaukig wie der erste Teil aber die Story ist halt auch eher schwach und insgesamt holt mich der Humor auch nicht ab. Mehr als ein ok kann man dem Film nicht geben.

I just want to add to the other comments saying that the humour is stuck in the past that I don't think it's just that, it's also that the characters don't really feel like themselves. The entire movie feels like someone tried to replicate the original without really understanding it and also depending too much on it. There were also things happening that I genuinely don't get / aren't explored properly. I obviously don't expect much depth from a satirical comedy, but it _would_ be nice if it made some form of sense, you know.

Für mich ist es jetzt schon ein Klassiker. Bully & Co sind einfach die besten 👍👍👍👍
