Jinkies! I thought I had a handle on this movie going in, but, man, I was way off. I know this is listed as a Scooby-Doo "parody," but be assured, this is a horror movie, not a horror comedy, not a spoof. Being a fan of the classic Scooby Doo, Where are you? series - in addition to other iterations, including the live-action movies from the 2000s - I was excited to see a more grounded, horror version of Scoob and the gang, but zoinks! This film is not messing around, there are stakes. I'll take a step back and talk about the gang: they all have different names - since I'm sure they couldn't get any actual rights to the characters, but if you know the team, you know who's who, and, man, do I love what they did with them. I'm not going to even bother with the movie names. Scooby is just a dog. Fred is just a normal dude. Shaggy is a kind of burnout punk, and really looks the closest of them all. Daphne is just a normal chick, but she does have a purple skirt, and heels. Velma still has the big sweater, skirt, and high socks, but aside from that, she's just a real person. The overall theme is they all feel like they belong in 2012, and the choice to make them a ghost-hunter team is pure genius. Like, all of this makes sense and feels as though you're watching a believable team. One odd aspect was that Velma, and Daphne mention Scooby Doo in a scene, so the cartoon actually exists in this universe. I wish that wasn't in the movie, I like to think that this team is the true Mystery Inc. in this world. I was totally blown away by this, and it makes me wonder if it was conceived after watching _The Cabin in the Woods_ (2011), which felt like a dark, gritty reimagining of Scooby Doo. Lastly, I have never been a Daphne fan, but you give me Daphne boobs and I'm here for it. Still, I am team Velma all the way, and I love her in this.
