The film has several issues. It shows Phool, a child bride married to an adult, but doesn't address child marriage. Despite realizing her limited perspective, she doesn’t pursue education and ends up in the same situation she feared. The arranged marriage is depicted as a love story with forced romance, as Phool suddenly falls for Deepak despite her initial fear. The movie also stereotypes Dalit men as violent drunkards and uses a controversial dialogue to justify their behavior. Jaya, knowing she’s leaving with Deepak, shows no concern for Phool's safety and only thinks of her after Deepak's suffering. The corrupt and misogynistic cop, who was initially uninterested in finding Phool, suddenly becomes helpful and assists Jaya, which is an inconsistent character arc. The film tries to address women's issues in rural India but fails in its execution. It misses being a true satire by perpetuating harmful stereotypes and glossing over important social issues like child marriage. The portrayal of marginalized women lacks depth, focusing more on forced narratives than on genuine stories of resilience and empowerment. Instead of challenging societal norms, the film ends up reinforcing harmful tropes, missing the chance to make a meaningful statement.

Laapata Ladies is a small film with a big heart. One of those films you fall in love with. Right from the novel premise to the interesting sequence of events, stellar performance, this movie deserves the highest praise for its originality, Honesty and sincerity. don't miss it!!
