I don’t know if I’ve just gotten older, but it seems so wrong to trivialize drug trafficking. I think drug traffickers are some of the worst people in modern Mexico. The term ‘narco’ doesn’t even begin to describe them; their criminal activities include corruption, extortion, kidnapping, murder, human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and acts of terrorism. They’ve infiltrated all levels of government and have a presence in every social sphere, from religious organizations to business circles. Without a doubt, they’re the main source of the worst problems plaguing my country. It made me angry. Is this supposed to be a kids’ movie? It looks like a kids’ movie, and a bad one at that. It’s like a poorly written children’s story by someone who thinks writing for kids is easy, filled with the most basic, childish fantasy clichés. That alone is already bad. But then, we also have the context of the father’s criminal activities, which obviously makes it far from kid-friendly. It’s rated TV-MA for language and violence, yet it still feels like it was made by someone who thinks kids are dumb enough to enjoy it. I also don’t think it works for an adult… at least not for an adult who isn’t clueless. Anyway, it didn’t work for me. I went from anger to pity. It must be terrible to live in a bubble, so disconnected from the violent reality, and worse still, to be exposed by your own work.
