Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, a little girl is bounced from one school to another until she encounters one of the early luminaries of holistic learning in Japan. Based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, a popular Japanese TV personality and actress. While Totto’s experience could have brought thought-provoking insights into the problems that still permeate the Japanese educational system and the stigmatization of special needs, the movie prefers to remain friendly to younger viewers, only giving some vague hints and mostly focusing on self-contained vignettes. However, once the events start taking more dramatic turns, the direction gradually gets more and more inspired and elegant, finally able to cause an emotional response in older viewers as well.

Compelling story with meaningful message, delivered through an unconventional POV from the 2nd World War –an insightful one, as well. Fine animation and voice acting :thumbsup_tone3:
