Frankly its fantastic and I think measurably better than the first movie. Zootopia 2 avoids all of the fears I had for narrative direction for a sequel and tackles a deep, dark, topical story that hits so close to home in this ever darkening nihilistic world. There are nitpicks, yes, but this movie top to bottom has heart, and has succeeded in warming the tundra town that was my pessimistic outlook on the state of the world even if for just a few days.
Warning: Beware of the clear bad messages to corrupt children throughout the film. The story itself has a positive message, bad politicians lie to the public to hide heinous crime against a specific aboriginal race. Unfortunately, along the storyline, the characters said things that poison targeted audence, which are kids. Something like: female is better than male, being criminal is useful, God doesn't exist, etc. Disney is still trying to destroy the next generation. Avoid at all cost.
okay i'm glad to see i'm not the only one who thought this was WAY better than the first one (I still love it though) the development _(i'll refrain from making an arrested development joke, but jason bateman being there makes it tempting lol)_ of nick & judy's relationship is really compelling, actually when
the carrot pen fell down the mountain everyone at my function 'aww :slight_frown:' 'd out loud at the same voice tone haha
, some scenes truly had me at the edge of my seat
(especially the shack chase! and the aftermath of the treason!!)
and most importantly... the twist... oh my god
Somehow this time they TRULY blindsided me with the twist villain holy shit PAWBERT WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU!! UNLIKE YOUR FATHER!!! his villain twist was devastating, I think I felt it as much as the main characters lol :(
it was so interesting to meet reptiles!! i'm a huge fan of worldbuilding in stories and zootopia's is pretty cool, but in this movie I found it more interesting than in the first one idk why.
and gary is such a sweetie I love him! his story made me think of disney princesses somehow? y'know when they find a 'random' person who turns out to be the rightful heir of everything ~~everywhere at once~~ etc etc and it's a sweet moment of justice yay
so yeah i found the whole movie fantastic and left the movie theater thinking i'd love to watch it again as soon as it's on disney+ :) also, unlike most people at my function, i stayed for the post credits scene and
OMG THERE'LL BE A ZOOTOPIA 3? AND IT WILL HAVE BIRDS?? I'M SO SEATED!!! this one set the bar high though... how can you top this.
anyway this felt like a 10/10 to me, no notes (and if there were lows well i forgot because i was too entertained by the highs of this movie. peak cinema. to me it's up there with Shrek 2 in terms of "sequels that topped the original movie")
Disney really messed up here, in my opinion. Releasing Zootopia 2 right after Beastars was a problem, since any expansion of the universe they do will kind of look like they're just copying the manga/anime to me.
This was literally such a blast. My first cinema experience in a year and a half, and the first movie I've ever seen on opening day, and it was phenomenal! While like the first film it has a case at its centre, Zootopia 2 is a lot more about Nick and Judy's partnership. The animation is stunning, the music joyous, and the jokes were on point. So many laugh-out-loud bits, but also a lot of heart. Nick and Judy's confessions to each other were so damn real and beautifully done. A perfect sequel, and honestly great on its own merits!
