I loved this! Had never seen it before tonight. It's really great. All three segments are awesome and the practical effects are good too. It may not be much of a horror, but it's pretty thrilling. And look, I hate cats. I am not a cat fan. But this lead cat is one helluva actor. Top notch cat acting.
The true star of this film was the cat. He had to dodge dangerous traffic, outrun rabid Cujo, outwit a stabbing gnome, was caged in a shelter, and withstood electric shock therapy. He rode in cars, trucks, ferries and trains, travelling in carriers a box. And was somehow guided by its spectral communication with a mannequin and a TV. And they named the movie for his perspective - but he wasn't even credited?? That cat should sue.
"Cat's Eye" is a three-story, Horror anthology tied together using a unique wrap-around...a spunky little cat, desperate to help a little girl. I think the cat as hero is a really smart way to bring everything together. He's got a bit to do in each story, and it's surprising to see the him used in the first two stories, which were each pulled from Stephen King's short-story collection called "Night Shift". Any self-respecting Horror fan knows "Night Shift". It was a staple of the 1980's Horror paperback craze. The first two segments of this movie recreate the stories "Quitter's Inc." and "The Ledge". They are both quite good, but I really like "The Ledge" here. It's the best story in the movie and surpasses the last original segment with a mini-troll attacking a little girl (Drew Barrymore) in her room. This is the story where the cat becomes superhero. It's mostly a cute little thriller. All three of these stories team up to make "Cat's Eye" a good time. It's not scary, it's just a little bit mean-spirited and it's actually quite funny. There is one thing that bugs me about "Cat's Eye" and it's the mother of the little girl in the last segment. She's played by Candy Clark and she is an entirely unlikable character.
A bizarre horror-comedy from Stephen King, _Cat’s Eye_ is uneven and poorly crafted. This anthology of tales follows an aversion therapy clinic that uses mafia tactics, a sadistic millionaire who makes an unusual wager, and a child who’s being stalked by a troll. Each segment has a different tone, and the troll story feels especially out of place. Additionally, the through-line connecting the various stories is tenuous and weak. However, the casting is rather interesting, and features James Woods, Robert Hays, and Drew Barrymore. Yet as bad as the film is (and it is bad), _Cat’s Eye_ is mildly entertaining and has its moments.
A rare anthology film where all 3 segments are pretty good. As a kid, it was always the third segment that I liked best but as an adult I appreciate the other two parts as well. Always good for an occasional revisit.
