Ignore the haters. It’s marvellously disjointed.
An unexpected pleasure of a movie. While samara weaving is really good it's all about ray nicholson and his delightfully unhinged performance.Every facial expression..every mannerism and every psychotic smile you can see his iconic father jack in him.
Ray Nicholson delivers a gloriously unhinged performance in Borderline, masterfully balancing disturbing intensity with hilariously manic energy. It’s impossible to look away—he’s magnetic, showcasing a powerful pedigree of acting talent but carving out his own distinct style separate from his iconic father, Jack Nicholson. Honestly, that alone sums up the film: familiar roots, uniquely executed. Samara Weaving brings her dependable scream queen charisma, adding depth and charm amid the chaos. Alba Baptista matches the film’s wildly unpredictable energy, standing out with her delightfully manic presence. Their duet rendition of a Celine Dion classic is a standout, both brilliant and bizarrely fun. Director Jimmy Warden’s unapologetically batshit tone feels genuinely exhilarating, offering a rare, truly original experience in an era of safe and predictable films. Paired with fantastic musical choices, Borderline stands out as a refreshingly insane entry into contemporary cinema.
This works because of certain individual perrformances, Ray Nicholson in particular, I haven't seen anyone portray a dissociative mental health problem in such a successful way since Heath Ledgers Joker. Samara Weavings pop star was acted in the way I think we all would expect that type of person to be. Alba Baptista as Penny was utterly insane and believably psychotic.
>*"You are flat!"* What a pleasant surprise! Completes Samara Weaving's trilogy of fun horror comedies alongside *Ready or Not* and *The Babysitter*. It's hard to believe this is Jimmy Warden's first directional effort. Fun editing and soundtrack, satisfying camerawork and lighting... the real heart of this thing are the characters and the comedy though. They're all silly and have a main gimmick which is so funny. The best performance by far is Ray Nicholson as the mentally ill sociopath stalker, he's so entertaining and unpredictable. Not too far behind is Alba Baptista as the unhinged Penny, absolutely love her character and the piano scene is my favorite of the movie. It goes without saying that Weaving is awesome too but her character is what we're used to seeing from her. The kills are brutal and original enough but the camera is either too far away or it cuts before you see too much blood unfortunately (the fire one was awesome though). I laughed so much at the church scenes and the change in setting felt refreshing. There's a lingering scene in the credits and wow, great performance!
