Synopsis

They're rowdy, they're ragtag, they're misfits turned mercenaries for hire. Vox Machina is more interested in easy money and cheap ale than actually protecting the realm. As a non-Critical Role fan, I just want to emphasise how accessible this series is. At times, it feels like a normal TV show, but its improv nature really makes it stand out. I had my doubts about adapting a DND campaign, but these guys proved that it's possible. And they created something so fun, full of heart, action, adventure and consistent comedy! Season 2 when? **7/10**

They’re Vox Machina, and they fuck shit up! I went into this having no knowledge of Critical Role and no interest in D&D. I tried playing it once before, but it’s just not my cup of tea. My wife recommended this series to me even though I was skeptical at first, but man, not even 10 minutes went by on the first episode, and I ended up loving it, solely because of how hard it was making me laugh. And lemme tell you, I am so glad I decided to keep watching til the end. As just a general fan of animation, this is such an endearing fantasy story that you can tell has had a lot of care going into it, even if you don’t watch Critical Role. It’s animation is on par with Avatar The Last Airbender, its characters are all so charming, the gore and action choreography is a lot of fun, and it is so god damn funny and quotable. Thank you honey for introducing me to a new favorite show of mine and I can’t wait to see Season 2.

Absolutely beautiful. Different enough from the streamed game to be thoroughly entertaining, yet hits most of the strongest, funniest and most emotional notes of the roleplay as well. The Briarwood arc was a great place to start, as much as I'd loved to have seen Kraghammer, Clarota and K'Varn. I eagerly look forward to season two and the
Chroma Conclave
, as well as the
search for the Vestiges
required to take them on. But most of all, I hope we get to see
Grog on the shitter chatting with Craven Edge
. Big guy has lost
his epic beard
, he needs this moment to make up for it.

This has a lot of high ratings all around but I found it to be honestly quite mediocre. While there is some fun to be had I think my main issue with the show is its tone. There's a lot of fucked-up shit that happens, but it's pulled right next to toilet humour that I find it hard to take the stakes seriously. It also probably doesn't help that I just didn't find any of the jokes funny. The plot is extremely standard, which I think is fine for a fantasy show as long as its characters and worldbuilding remain interesting. I think most of the main cast is likeable but ultimately forgettable. I think it's just difficult to balance 7 characters who all follow pretty cliche archetypes and somehow make them stand out. The world-building is just ok. It's letdown by the "standard" 2D animation style and all the dull set pieces. I get that it's a dark story and most of it is set at night, but it makes this show very boring to look at outside of the fight sequences.
