Synopsis

This one-hour drama focuses on a suburban town whose preconceptions are shattered after a global event dubbed “The Departure” (which may or may not have been the Biblical “rapture”), in which 140 million people – 2% of the world’s population – disappeared without a trace. Seen primarily through the eyes of a beleaguered police chief, the series shows how ordinary people react to the inexplicable.

Three years after millions of people – some 2% of the world’s population – vanished into thin air, residents of Mapleton, NY weigh the pros and cons of a “Heroes Day” tribute to the local “Departed.” Attempting to maintain a sense of normalcy in his strained community, police chief Kevin Garvey faces additional challenges at home with his daughter, Jill, who’s lost in a cloud of apathy with her friend Aimee, and son, Tom, who has gravitated to a cult led by the charismatic Holy Wayne. Also of concern is a silent, white-clad group of chain-smoking men and women called the Guilty Remnant, who team up in pairs to stake out people and places around town. As tension in Mapleton escalates, the lives of Laurie, an unexpected member of the Guilty Remnant, and Meg, a recently engaged young woman, converge.

A very interesting season of television. I'm not sure how much I really liked it, but there's something about it that makes me eager to keep watching more. Things got very emotional towards the end of the season. I hope season 2 and 3 deliver.

Just finished Season 1 of The Leftovers for the first time and... Wow! Yeah, it's serious and somber, but in the best way. The storytelling is ambitious and provocative, asking big questions about grief and meaning and then actually sitting with the uncomfortable answers. There are moments that are genuinely breathtaking and stirring. I caught myself just staring at scenes that were beautifully composed and emotionally charged. The performances are powerful; everyone sells the confusion and pain so convincingly it hits you in the chest. It's not an easy watch. It's challenging and sometimes bleak, but also strangely inspirational in how it refuses cheap resolutions. If you want something that stays with you and makes you think and feel, this show is worth it (so far at least!). Hope Season 2 can keep up! Edit: One thing I forgot to mention is how much I liked that it was NOT a mystery-box show. No one was trying to "investigate" the paranormal event, in like a scientific or supernatural way. It's three years after the fact, everyone "Leftover" just has to emotionally process that "it happened", and move on with the rest of their lives (or be broken about it). Of course there's SOME hints that OTHER supernatural phenomenon may happen / have happened, but that's not the focus of the story and I like that about it.

Watching this was a cardinal mistake. The thing feels like a fever dream that never ends and while it might get better later on, I wish I would’ve done something else with the time I wasted watching this.

You really have to stick with it, because most of the weird stuff only starts to make sense in the final few episodes. I love how this show took its time to fully delve into all the characters in the first half of the season, with some episodes highlighting one or two of the main characters. The plot is rich and thematically interesting, and asks questions about meaning making and purpose in a world where no one seems to have answers for the things that happen. Who do we believe? Scientists? Religious figures? Cult leaders? Most of the characters have interesting arcs, but some of the B-storylines feel haphazard and unnecessary for the main plot (Tom/Wayne/Christine & Dean the dog killer), making the show less focussed than it should be. Also, for as great as most of the acting is (Justin Theroux & Carrie Coon in particular), some of the younger actors aren’t all that great. 7.5/10
