It's a very human story about grief and guilt, but with supernatural elements woven into the plot. The filmmakers did a wonderful job of creating a layered story with multiple intertwined mysteries.
It uses terror to make social commentary on neighborhood conflicts, one of the most serious problems in South Korea, creating a multi-sensory horror texture that uses silence and off-screen as elements of tension. However, its turn toward the supernatural, approaching the concept of haunted houses, results in a chaotic ending that fails to enhance the atmosphere of suspense it manages to create in some scenes, taking it to more conventional territory. But in the first part, it achieves some particularly successful moments regarding the use of sound as a metaphor for personal traumas.
