The premise is simple, Laz Ingram is the CEO of Vista, Elon Musk to SpaceX, if you will. Vista is a private company funded by the investors and US government to be "the first" to accomplish a manned mission to Mars. The first episode starts with a bang, then settles down to explore political challenges and key personnels, one layer at a time. The shift in momentum is unsettling, and at times drags. But they build up to a very satisfying season finale. There's a scene towards the end of episode 8 that is just breathlessly moving and genuine. The most intriguing character is Laz Ingram, expertly played by **Natascha McElhone**. Like many characters in the series, Laz is very complex, whose desire is often Machiavellian and distant. But little by little, we see genuine compassion for people she respect underneath. The lead character is Tom Haggerty, the mission commander, played by **Sean Penn**. Sean Penn is the master of portraying anger. Here, he carefully hides his anger and bitterness, but it's always there. And very brief moments when he allows his anger to surface, it is truly incredible. Sean Penn and Natascha McElhone are surrounded by top rate cast and filmmakers. The series is visually stunning, whose effect rivals the best of big budget films like **Interstellar** and **Gravity**.
